339. Requirements as to navigational equipment.—(1) Every Pakistani ship when going to sea shall be provided with such navigational equipment as are required to be carried under the Safety Convention: Provided that the Federal Government may exempt from the operation of this sub-section any ship of gross tonnage of less than five hundred, not being a passenger ship, if it is of opinion that, having regard to the nature of the voyages on which the ship is engaged, the provision of a gyro- compass is unnecessary or unreasonable. (2) All reasonable steps shall be taken to maintain the equipment mentioned in sub-section (1) in an efficient condition but the malfunction of such equipment shall not render the ship un-seaworthy nor shall it be considered as a reason for delaying the ship in ports, where repair facilities are not readily available.
