Section 554: Prevention of pollution by sewage and garbage from ships

554. Prevention of pollution by sewage and garbage from ships.—(1) The discharge of sewage and disposal of garbage into the sea from any ship is prohibited except as specified under the convention. (2) The Federal Government may, in respect of a Pakistani ship, issue with an international sewage pollution prevention certificate for the prescribed period which shall not exceed five years from the date of issue thereof after satisfactory survey in the prescribed manner. (3) Garbage management plan and garbage record book shall be maintained as required under the convention. (4) If sewage or garbage is discharged or disposed of into the sea in contravention of sub- section (1), the master or the owner of the ship shall be liable to a fine which may extended to ten thousand US dollars. (5) The provisions of this section shall take effect from such date as the Federal Government may by notification in the official Gazette, appoint.
