Section 559: Equipment in ships to prevent pollution

559. Equipment in ships to prevent pollution.—(1) For the purpose of preventing or reducing discharges of oil and oily mixtures into the sea, and for cleaning, removing of dispersing any oil and oily mixture already discharged, the Federal Government may make rules requiring Pakistani ships to be fitted with such equipment and to comply with such other requirements (including requirement for preventing the escape of fuel oil or heavy diesel oil into bilges) as may be prescribed. (2) If a Pakistani ship is not fitted with equipment as required by sub-section (1) the master, owner, operator or the agent shall be liable to a fine which may extend to five hundred thousand rupees and in case of a continuing offence with an additional fine which may extend to five thousand rupees for every day during which such offence continues after first conviction.
